How to Spot the Early Warning Signs of Termite Infestation

Published by Safe Home Pestochem • 4 min read

Termites are often called 'silent destroyers' because they can hollow out structural timbers and wardrobes for years without obvious exterior signs. Knowing the early biological indicators can save lakhs in carpentry repairs.

1. Mud Tubes on Foundation Walls

Subterranean termites construct earthen shelter tubes (pencil-thick mud tunnels) across concrete plinths, skirting boards, and brick mortar. These protect worker termites from drying out in open air as they travel between soil and timber.

2. Hollow Sounding Woodwork

Tap door frames, baseboards, and window frames with the back of a screwdriver. A hollow, papery sound or timber that easily punctures under light thumb pressure indicates termites have eaten the interior cellulose core.

3. Discarded Swarmer Wings on Windowsills

During the humid onset of monsoon rains, reproductive winged termites ('alates') emerge to mate and start new colonies. Finding piles of identical gossamer wings near light bulbs or windowsills indicates a mature colony nearby.

4. Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows

As termites feed and tunnel inside wooden framing, the moisture they bring into the timber causes doors and windows to warp, stick, and become difficult to open or latch.
