Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are notorious hitchhikers frequently brought home from hotel stays, long-distance railway berths, or second-hand luggage. Early detection is critical to avoid whole-house spread.
1. Waking with Clustered, Itchy Red Bites
Bed bug bites often appear in small linear clusters of 3 to 4 bites (colloquially called 'breakfast, lunch, and dinner') on exposed skin surfaces such as arms, neck, and shoulders.
2. Tiny Dark Fecal Spots on Sheets
Examine the piping and seams of mattresses and box springs. Bed bugs leave tiny dark brown or black pin-head spots of digested blood that smear when wiped with a damp cloth.
3. Translucent Exoskeletons (Shed Skins)
As bed bug nymphs grow through five instar stages, they shed translucent yellow-brown exoskeletons. These cast skins accumulate in mattress crevices, behind headboards, and inside electrical faceplates.
4. Sweet, Musty Harboring Odor
In moderate to severe infestations, bed bugs release sweet, sickly pheromones from their scent glands reminiscent of rotten coriander or damp almonds.
